Business Link: April 2010 regulation changes

Small business and rural rate relief
From 1 April 2010, the thresholds for small business rate relief and rural rate relief will increase. The rules on reapplying for relief will also change.
VAT filing and payment
From 1 April 2010, all existing VAT-registered businesses with an annual turnover of £100,000 or more excluding VAT - and all businesses newly registered for VAT - will have to submit their VAT returns online and pay any VAT due electronically.
Data Protection
From 6 April 2010, businesses that seriously contravene the data protection principles may receive a penalty of up to £500,000. This includes all data controllers throughout the UK and includes businesses that process personal information.
Sickness absence
From 6 April 2010, a new statement of fitness for work is being introduced to replace existing medical statements (or 'sick notes')
Additional paternity leave and pay
From 6 April 2010, eligible employees will have the right to take additional paternity leave and pay (APLP).
Time for training
From 6 April 2010, employees in firms with more than 250 employees will gain the right to request time off for training. The right will be extended to all employees in April 2011.
Fire safety
From 6 April 2010, new regulations will clarify that employers in England will have to assess a worker's capabilities to carry out fire safety-related tasks.
